Create a local network or extend the number of ports provided on a router by using a Network switch. Compared to hubs, switches perform faster (where bandwidth is provided per connection rather than shared through the whole set of ports).

For ADSL Broadband (provided through a telephone connection), these routers allow a connection to be shared over network ports or over a wireless connection.

Cable Routers are used for cable broadband (eg Virgin Media) which have an existing Ethernet connection supplied by the TV box. Share the internet connection between multiple PCs via ethernet or wireless.

Powerline adapters (often referred as HomePlug ) allow you to use the power circuit of your home as a local area network and save the need for laying cables. Potentially has a wider range than wireless networking, but can be used alongside wireless.
